Parrots should be fed 1-2 times per day-or at least have pellets out all day to munch on.

Harrison's is by far the best parrot food out there. It is organic, etc. They now have some new varieties including a peppered formulation that some of my birds absolutely love. And he now makes Birdie Bread! Which is super easy to make and the birds love it!

In addition, offering a small amount of fruits and veggies. No raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate,or avocado.

Typically I feed harrisons with a combo of the following: blueberries, blackberries, peas, carrots, corn, apple, banana. sometimes a little bread or whatever it is that i am eating at the time.

Nutriberries are not balanced and are simply seed, and should not be fed. This is like feeding candy as a meal.

For proper calcium absorption it is imperative for your bird to have proper amounts of vitamin d. this is acquired from the sun or full spectrum lighting. UV light does not penetrate glass and must be unobstructed sunlight or full spectrum lighting. vitamin d deficiency is a very hot topic in human medicine right now, in terms of its effects on the immune system, cancer, etc. and studies show that people that are deficient have a higher risk of dying from any disease. It is lack of sunlight in the winter that makes people susceptible to the flu. It is not that the flu only comes out in the winter...

BIRD STORE OWNERS TAKE EXTREME MEASURES TO SILENCE CRITICISM

Committed Concerned Citizens Continue Compassion Crusade this Weekend

August 21, 2008, Burlington, N.J.: In their nonstop campaign to silence criticism of the multi-million dollar bird trade, representatives of Bird Paradise contacted the employer of one of the lead advocates to require removal of information from the website www.BoycottBirdParadise.com. Undeterred, advocates vow to continue their efforts to expose bird suffering with another demonstration at the store this weekend.

The most recent action was unprecedented: Employers of the advocates involved in the campaign to help raise awareness of the suffering of birds in captivity are unrelated in any way to the campaign, yet Bird Paradise representatives didn't hesitate to attempt to harass and intimidate demonstrators by contacting at least one employer to request that action be taken to require the removal of information from the website also known as www.BirdHell.com. The employer declined the request. It is unknown how many total employers were contacted.

What: Demonstration to Highlight Bird Suffering

When: Saturday, August 23, 2008, 3:00 p.m.

Bird Paradise's attempts to suppress free speech began in January, when store owners requested local police to remove demonstrators from public property outside the store. Continuing their campaign to squelch dissenting opinion this spring, Bird Paradise owners next filed a civil lawsuit in New Jersey Superior Court to prevent the next planned demonstration. When even this effort failed (the ACLU stepped in to represent the demonstrators and the lawsuit was dismissed), things turned ugly when one of the owners, Kathy Lance, assaulted a demonstrator during the first demonstration in April, causing cuts and bruises and requiring emergency medical treatment.

After she was videotaped attacking the demonstrator, Lance fled the scene but local police helped to identify Lance as the person who attacked the demonstrator, and assault charges were filed against Lance. Hours later, Lance filed a statement claiming the demonstrator "stepped on to the property of Bird Paradise with camera in hand" and filed charges against the demonstrator for assault, harassment, and trespassing. In court last month, all charges against the demonstrator were dismissed (the ACLU and esteemed attorney William H. Buckman donated their services to represent the demonstrator at no charge), and Lance pled guilty to a lesser charge. Ms. Lance's legal counsel requested the judge to prohibit communication of the guilty plea outside of the courtroom, but the judge refused.

"Bird Paradise is trying desperately to deflect attention from the true issue here, which is birds are wild animals that suffer greatly in captivity," said local advocate Marianne Bessey. "Even the most loving bird owner can't meet birds' needs to fly and flock. Stores like Bird Paradise continue the cycle of abuse by selling thousands of more birds, even when so many birds already suffering in captivity desperately need good homes."

NYPD planning to track every vehicle in Manhattan

(AP) - The New York Police Department is working on a plan to track every car, truck or other vehicle entering Manhattan and screen it for radiation or other terror threats.

The ambitious proposal, called Operation Sentinel, is being developed alongside a separate $90 million security initiative to tighten security at the World Trade Center site and throughout lower Manhattan in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"It's our goal to make lower Manhattan the safest and most inviting business area in the world," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a recent interview.

Police officials say Operation Sentinel would rely on license-plate readers, radiation detectors and closed-circuit cameras installed at the 16 bridges and four tunnels serving Manhattan, including the Brooklyn and George Washington bridges and the Lincoln Tunnel. About a million vehicles drive into Manhattan every day.

The vehicle data license plate numbers, radiological readings and photos would be automatically analyzed by computers programmed with information about suspicious vehicles.

Police say the terror-alert system could help them intercept attackers before they do harm or confirm that specific vehicles hadn't entered the city and should be sought elsewhere.

There is no estimate yet for the cost of Operation Sentinel since it is still only in the planning phase.

The proposal has raised red flags for civil rights advocates.

"We think that Operation Sentinel and a lot of the surveillance initiatives that the police are planning are an attack on our right to privacy here in New York," said Matt Faiella, a staff attorney for the New York Civil Liberties Union.

Mr. Faiella fears an untold number of innocent motorists could end up in "a database of all of their movements and faces."

But police say law-abiding New Yorkers have nothing to fear. Vehicle data deemed innocent would be purged from police records after 30 days, they said.

Investigators need "time to maintain this information to enable us to check and see if any information has surfaced concerning a vehicle coming into the city," Mr. Kelly said. "We don't think people should have cause for concern."

The proposal was contained in a security plan prepared by the NYPD's counterterrorism division that also outlined other measures already being implemented to secure lower Manhattan in a post-Sept. 11 world.

That plan calls for 116 fixed and mobile license-plate readers and 3,000 closed-circuit cameras monitored by officers assigned to a command center on Broadway. It was modeled in part after the "ring of steel" surveillance measures in London's financial district.

"We have worked closely with London authorities," the commissioner said. "But I would submit this will be a much more advanced system than they have in place."

The NYPD's auto theft division already uses unmarked police cruisers with two cameras mounted on the roof to read license plates of passing cars and those parked on either side of the street. Laptop computers inside the cruisers compare plate numbers to a computerized data base with information on stolen and suspicious cars and signal if there's a hit.

The systems have assisted in the recovery of hundreds of stolen cars and in scores of arrests, police said.

A Parrot Can be Dangerous

Parrots in captivity can bite and many have been known to draw blood and cause serious injuries. If you read through the messages on our board and elsewhere on the Internet you will see how parrots bite and injure their care givers.

I need some advice. My husband and I purchased a Dbl-yellow headed amazon from a friend. We were told the bird was a female. Anyways we have had Mandy Joe for about 4 months now and she's bitten me about 3 or 4 times. The last time was yesterday and she bit me hard enough to draw blood. For some reason when my husband brings her to my cousins house she gets real aggressive towards me. They have a Dbl yellow head as well that's supposed to be a male. Anyways my husband put her on top of his cage.

They have an African Grey in another cage next to it. I was talking to the African Grey and she fluffed up her neck and head feathers, went nuts and flew down on my head and ended up biting the heck out of my wrist. I'm having a hard time trusting her and to be honest I'm mad at her. Usually I can pick her up, give her kisses. I don't know what to do.. Can anyone explain this? I don't know if she gets jealous of the other bird or is trying to protect it. Maybe hormones?? Any suggestions? She rarely ever bites my husband, it's always me she decides to chomp on.

Beeper still bites sometimes, but he is better. He has learned through years of hard work that he can not bite me so hard and now he is easier about the bite sometimes it still draws blood.

Male Cockatiel Laying Eggs

We bought our male cockatiel, Lanni, about 3 or 4 years ago from a breeder/veterinarian. And tonight, we found an egg in his cage. It has a little bit of a bloody stain on the narrower end. At first, we considered it to be a practical joke played by a friend. But we looked up what a cockatiel egg looks like, and it fits the description to a 't.' Now, we considered that perhaps the breeder was wrong and Lanni was, in fact, a female, but he is already about 4 years old. From what I understand, females reach sexual maturity at just a few months and if he is a female, he should have been laying eggs for at least 3 years now. We were wondering if anyone have come upon this before or if anyone has any kind of idea of what is going on here. Thanks for any responses.

I have two green cheek conures which are 9 months of age. I didn't think that they would start mating at this early of age...but i was wrong. Im worried that my female might not be able to produce the egg and get hurt. Should I worry? I dont know anything about breeding or what they need except for calcium, vitamins and cuttlebone. What do you suggest for a good source of calcium? I heard someone say Cal-Quik? where would I be able to purchase that?

My opinion:

Poor Alex died, but you all need to know about how he had to live his life when not performing. He lived a terrible life, he was kept in a lab all day and night. If you have seen some of his videos, you will see he was plucking due to stress. She only wanted him to make money and when his fame was running out she had to bring attention back, she killed poor Alex -- she poisoned him with some stuff so no one could trace, and his death brought her more attention again. Poor Alex died to make us happy and to make their pockets richer and poor Alex lived in a small cage in a lab. Was this right?

Blue Front bonding to me

Hello all,

I am a bit disheartened currently..... I have a GREAT girlfriend (by great i mean that she and i have a GREAT relationship.... but even more important she and my little girls all get along GREAT too!!!) who has 3 great birds (OK 2 great birds, a parrotlet and a blue Quaker, and a blue front amazon who is 2 to 3 years old), lately the Blue Front (taco) has started to act like it is bonding to me... and in turn is drawing away from her..... we have 2 cages for each bird, one in the living room and one in a bed room for them to sleep in allowing us to stay up and make noise without the parrots chiming in and us keeping them up too late. Taco only bites me when I don't pay attention to his mood and aggression level etc... but lately Taco wont even let my girlfriend take him out of his night time cage with out drawing blood :( I leave for work early so me taking him out isn't really a good option.... my girlfriend is getting bummed out about it too, because she loves the bird and feels like she does everything for him, but he repays her by hating her :(

We have not had Taco sexed so we are not sure if it is a male or female, but either way i am thinking at 2 or 3 taco could be starting to come into sexual maturity, and i have read that blue fronts can get much more bitey then.

Lately it has appeared that Taco might be bonding to me.
Is there anything i can do to try to not have the bird bond with me? Is there any tricks that would help so taco is at least friendly toward his owner? I feel bad because i feel like i am taking Taco away from my girlfriend :( but yet we both know that the bird will bond with who it wants to bond with.

I had thought of pulling back from the bird.... still talking to taco, but not holding, not scratching his head etc to try to let him bond back to my GF, but i don't want to do any damage to the bird by me "rejecting" it.

Some examples of the behavior we are seeing.... these are all things that i do or can do to the bird that my GF cant do or cant do without a struggle....
1. i can pet Tacos back he wont let the GF even touch behind his head
2. i can do bird roller coaster (taco hanging upside down on my hand with me swinging him back and forth) the GF can do this but ONLY if I am not around
3. open Tacos cage without him trying to eat my hand
4. have Taco sit on my shoulder, he refuses to do this for the GF
5. Taco has also started using my voice for almost everything he says now, he used to say everything in a higher (more female voice) now he says everything in a deep male voice
6. Taco has changed his "kisses" from a long drawn out smooch to a quick kiss sound (the sound I make when I am "kissing" all the birds)
7. and taco is just generally much more friendly to me

When I am not around for a couple days.... then Taco will do most things without a fight with the GF, but when I walk in the house and Taco sees me, he almost screams "HI" flashes his eyes, and fans his tail, and generally is VERY excited to see me..... but i cant even have him step up then he will bite anyone who tries for a while after.

Sharing my bad luck

I'm sharing my bad luck in cyberspace with anyone of you who cares to read it.
Pay attention to these names/websites: Steve Frosti or Steven Frosti, acrylicman, www.acrylicman.com, www.acrylicworx.com .
Heres my story.
I googled bird cages. I wanted one like in the pet store. The big clear ones. Know what I mean? So I can see my birds good.
I saw I should get one made from acrylic.
The websites I listed above, both owned by the same man, had very nice pictures that were impressive to me. The prices were a little high but all of those kinds of cages are pricy.
I ordered the A3 model-which was the second from the largest one. The owner even talked me into getting a fan, a watering device, and a feeder at an extra charge, of course.
I ordered it in January. I never got anything. Never.
I thought I was dealing with a reputable kind of place. I talked to Steven Frosti and he was real friendly. He gave me good advice about what to get and what products might suit me.
I don't have good credit and I don't have a credit card so I mailed him a money order by certified mail and delivery confirmation where you have to sign for it.. I know he got it because the post office got his signature. I was promised I would get it 3 weeks from receipt of the money order. I gave it 4 weeks just since the weather wasn't always hunky dory. Nothing ever did come.
I called to him lots of times and left messages on his answering machine but he never called back. One time, I called him and he answered and as soon as I told him who I was he hung up on me.
It's been a very long time and I think I'm out of luck.
So to ease my conscience to think that no other consumer would have their money stolen the way I did, I figured to put a message out in cyberspace about it. Maybe you are thinking of getting one of his fancy cages too and won't let this happen to you.

		OMG is all i can say. For some reason I decided to try again to reach the Acrylicman when I saw your post and again all I can say is OMG. I first came in contact with the Acrylicmans bird cages on ebay. At the time I purchased cages from him he had positive ratings. I spent close to $600.00 on bird cages with him. I became a little worried when I received all of the other bird cages I had ordered and not the ones I ordered from him but I was in contact with him so I felt better. Yes he is a very friendly and conviencing con. He told me that the delay in sending out my cages was due to the bad weather in his area. It was true there were many snow storms at the time. Well what I have learned from dealing with him is that he will string you along with one excuse after the other until you can no longer go through either ebay or pay pal for any resolution. Every month he had another hard luck story after the other. In the late summer of 2007 I fell on bad times and really needed the money and told him if he could give me half of what he owned me then I would consider the debt satisfied. He couldn't even do this. He told me that he had given up on his business because things were so bad and I could not believe it when I saw your post and it just made me relive everything all over again. This man is the worst of the worst and there are times that I want to give up but I keep trying to get my money back. I just really can not believe he is still up to the same thing in 2008. I was scammed in 2007.

Another possible fake rescue

I learned through another group that Crystal Creek Avian Rescue (www.stayathome4birds.com) and www.ILparrotrescue.com in fact sell birds, use false identities, etc. etc. and are "fake rescues" and/or "brokers scamming for free exotics".

I apologize in advance if these claims are false and upset anyone here.

I hate this stuff.

Can anyone offer any information?

I have been asked to post this on the NYBC message board. There are several people who have been keeping watch on a My Space user fraudulently posing as a bird rescue and sanctuary to receive donations illegally. The evidence gathered on this site is extensive. What you are about to read is only a tiny portion of what has been going on.

Dear NYBC,

I wanted to bring your attention to someone who runs a My Space (Angels for Parrots) that has been scamming people for money posing as a bird rescue, then as a bird sanctuary. Three weeks ago she stated that she (Angels for Parrots) was going to get her 501c3 status in two days because she is disabled. This morning she stated she was having problems filling out the paperwork to file for not for profit status. When this person (Taneisha) posted a comment on her (Angels for Parrots) site, it was deleted and then the wording changed.

I decided to save some of this so it can be reported to authorities but I'm not sure who would handle someone fraudulently posing as a rescue or sanctuary in order to scam money. Can you either offer some advice or suggest to this person that she is breaking the law? This is a link to the My Space site...

Why does My Space keep blocking your page?
I used to volunteer at a dog shelter rescue. It costs a lot of money to become a not for profit. By the sound of things that I've read in the last couple of weeks on your site, you seem to be hurting for money. How could you possibly afford to file for not for profit status? Just because you own birds doesn't make you an avian sanctuary. Just like my family rescuing dogs doesn't make us a dog rescue. You might want to be careful about what you post on your site so that you don't get into trouble. That wouldn't be good.

The person who runs this site "Angels for Parrots" seems to be scamming people by fraudulently posing as some sort of bird rescue or sanctuary. Is there a way to put a stop to this? I know you've done excellent work with exposing bird mills. Any suggestions on what to do with this???

'Gooey stuff' in croup

Hi Guys.

I have a 5 year old male parakeet. He was trying to regurgitate, remained fluffy, lost weight and interest in toys. He went to the vet and they discovered an infected croup. He was placed on oxygen, put in an incubator, had his croup flushed, and had his feedings supplemented with tube feeding after the flushing. The slide of the stuff in his croup indicated a bacterial infection. He was sent home with meds. Next day I took him back to the vet because he was still fluffy. Further croup flushing shows the 'gooey stuff' keeps returning and we don't know why. Any suggestions? I know the vet did another slide and we will talk more on Monday. Any ideas on what can cause a bird to constantly be trying to regurgitate and for 'gooey stuff' to keep building up in croup?
